The ecological metaphor allows us to talk about the complexity and evolving nature of the relationships and knowledge systems within the university. The digital ecosystem supports a diversity of entities (individuals, communities, organizational constructs) within a balanced habitat/system. The ecosystem implies dynamic change, the increasing recognition of the interdependencies of the systems, and the effects of the environmental stresses - economic, cultural, and political - upon it. An ecosystem is never static. It continues to evolve. It is a work in progress. In ODAI we have identified four elements of the digital ecosystem that create sustainable infrastructure: content, communities, practices and policy, and technology.
